This is probably your last chance to get an NES Classic (update: sold out)


Missed out on the NES Classic? Already eagerly looking forward to being disappointed by not being able to purchase a SNES Classic this fall? Well, don’t give up hope just yet. ThinkGeek (which is owned by GameStop) has just put up one last batch of the NES Classic on its website.
There is one catch, though: ThinkGeek isn’t selling the mini retro console as a standalone item for the usual retail price of $59.99. Rather, there’s a choice of six bundles ranging from $139.99 (which gets you the console, three canvas art prints, a Zelda jigsaw puzzle, and a Piranha Plant puppet) to $219.99 (for a bundle that includes a wearable Mega Man helmet, arm cannon, and mug). Still, even considering the fact that you’re stuck with the extra bundled items, it’s a better deal than almost anything we’ve seen these days on the secondhand market.

Facebook’s rumored smart speaker would be DOA If Facebook is planning to make a smart speaker, it should really reconsider. A report in  Digitimes  today  says that  Facebook’s Building 8 research group  is developing a smart speaker with a 15-inch touch panel. There are lots of reasons to be skeptical of this:  Digitimes  has a mixed track record on tech rumors; supply chain sources can misidentify projects or describe early tests that don’t make it to market; Facebook doesn’t have a voice assistant yet; and a 15-inch screen on a speaker seems kind of ridiculous. Asked for comment, a Facebook representative said, “We don’t have anything to share at this time.” All that being said, it still seems entirely possible that Facebook would want to get in on the smart speaker game. This Drone Battery for Submarines Drinks Seawater As  Boeing  and others work to advance underwater drones, those drones will need better batteries. MIT spinout Open Water Power (OWP) has developed and aluminum-water power system that's safer and more durable that current drone batteries, and on top of that gives underwater drones a tenfold increase in range over traditional lithium-ion. OWP built a system out of alloyed aluminum, a cathode alloyed with a combination of elements, primarily nickel, and an alkaline electrolyte that's positioned between the electrodes. Underwater drones generally need larger batteries than airborne ones, to the extent that it's not practical to ship lithium-ion batteries of that size because of the chance that they'll catch fire—not that it would last long underwater, but long enough to destroy the battery.
